What on earth is a ZozoRita? Everyone knows that Old Man Gloom loves a party and the City of Santa Fe even throws him a big one every year on the Friday before Labor Day! Any good party deserves a one-of-a-kind concoction to celebrate, so think of Zozobra and a city known for its Margarita Trail, you get the picture!
The ZozoRita was inspired by The Zozobra Decades Project, created in 2014 as a unique way to party up and count down to the 100th anniversary of the Burning of Zozobra, coming in 2024. In 2015, the talented mixologists of Southern Glazer’s Wines and Spirits answered the call to honor Zozobra with his own cool signature margarita, a fresh twist on an age-old Santa Fe favorite made especially for him. We’re sure Santa Fe’s biggest egotist thinks he deserves it, and although Old Man Gloom would never admit to being happy about anything, you’re sure to hear all about it at the 99th Burning of Zozobra on Friday, September 1, 2023!
Where can you sample this refreshing summer beverage? Our Southern Glazer’s Wine and Spirits partners have tapped local restaurants and lounges to serve the ZozoRita this year, but we encourage you to ask for it at your favorite watering hole! We’re proud to announce that Tomasita’s, Del Charro, and Dr. Fieldgoods have kicked off their participation in the 2023 Zozobra fundraiser by selling the ZozoRita in this year’s collectible glassware. Southern Glazer’s of Albuquerque has offered its generous support to Zozobra and the Kiwanis Club year after year, and the fame of the ZozoRita has spread far and wide thanks to the superb skills of the mixologists at these fine establishments. How about a round of Zozobra-sized applause for these great partners!
Most importantly, $1 from each commemorative glass at these local restaurants is donated to Santa Fe area nonprofits that make a better life for the children of our community. But shhhh….don’t tell Zozobra he’s doing something good!
Funds raised from online purchases of the collectible ZozoRita glass 2-packs and other Zozobra merchandise also go to benefit children, and the cool 2023 design honors this year’s Decades project 2000s and 2010s theme — The Walking Dread. What could be more perfect for Santa Fe’s favorite monster?
When you visit Del Charro, Dr. Field Goods, or Tomasita’s and order a ZozoRita, while you savor the delicious thought of your gloom being extinguished with Zozobra on Friday, September 1st, you’ll enjoy the warm fuzzy feeling of knowing that the net proceeds help support our community’s kids! And remember, YOU take home the glass!
Can’t make it to one of these landmark restaurants in Santa Fe or Albuquerque? No worries, purchase the cool collectible glasses online and make Old Man Gloom’s favorite margarita yourself, you savvy DIY-er! You and a friend can enjoy this year’s sweet or spicy ZozoRita crafted with Espolòn Tequila, using either of the two new 2023 recipes. Try your hand with both!
Keep in mind that this is the one-year countdown to the 100th anniversary celebration of the Burning of Zozobra and also the final year of the Decades Project, so share a toast with your besties before you celebrate at the 99th Burning of Zozobra on Friday, September 1, 2023! We’re looking forward to seeing you there, and Zozobra will be watching you, regardless of what you’re eating or drinking!
