ZozoFest 2019

Break out the disco balls and the bell-bottoms! The Annual Burning of Zozobra may be the most far-out show in town, but before the Old Man goes up in smoke, the Kiwanis Club of Santa Fe is stoked for celebrating his impending doom with a retro 1970’s themed party! AND IT'S ALL FREE!

Gather the gang and head Southside to be among the first to meet Zozobra at the FREE 7th Annual ZozoFest  and Zozobra Art Show on Friday through Sunday, August 23-25, 2019, at Santa Fe Place Mall in the former Sports Authority space on the western end of the Mall, located at 4250 Cerrillos Rd, Santa Fe, NM 87507, just across from Applebee’s and Flying Tortilla. at the annual ZozoFest, taking place at Santa Fe Place Mall from Friday, August 23 through  Sunday, August 25, 2019.

Come get a first-look preview of Santa Fe’s most freaky character, before his ginormous head and cavernous body are joined together and hauled up the pole to meet his fate at the 95th Annual Burning of Zozobra at Fort Marcy Park on Friday, August 30, 2019. You can even put your own glooms right into ZOZOBRA and view his enormous head before it is joined to his body!

The ZozoFest Art Exhibit recognizes the importance of Zozobra, aka “Old Man Gloom” as an icon for the city of Santa Fe. The Burning of Zozobra is an unforgettable spectacle that has inspired artwork for over nine decades, and ZozoFest brings hundreds of inspired depictions of Old Man Gloom to one place. Old Man Gloom's dedicated fans can purchase one-of-a-kind artwork, limited edition prints, sculptures, photographs, and creative works in a variety of media to take home. Hundreds of drawings created by Santa Fe Public School students will also be on display, showcasing the enduring love for Santa Fe’s oldest grouch.

“When the Kiwanis Club builds Zozobra, we accept that we have to get rid of him,” says ZozoFest Art Show Curator, Scott Wiseman. “This is his entire purpose, but the artwork created in his likeness gives him a chance to stay alive year-round, existing as an important element in our history and culture.  The art show is also extremely inclusive. I’ve never had to turn down any artists and the entry fee is $0. It doesn’t matter if it’s an artist's first time showing in an art show or their 100th––all are welcome.

This year, ZozoFest lets Zozobra boogie down into the 1970s, as Year Six of the Decades Project visits the disco 1970s, home to both the Brady Bunch and Star Wars. Who better than Zozobra to give props to the Dark Side at his hot party!
