IT’S ZOZOFEST TIME!
Break out the VHS and the bomber jackets! The Annual Burning of Zozobra may be the most far-out show in town, but before the Old Man goes up in smoke, the Kiwanis Club of Santa Fe is stoked for celebrating his impending doom with a rad retro 1980’s themed party! AND IT’S ALL FREE!
Gather the gang and head Southside to be among the first to meet Zozobra at the FREE Annual ZozoFest and Zozobra Art Show, Friday through Sunday, August 27-29, 2021, at Santa Fe Place Mall, located at 4250 Cerrillos Rd, Santa Fe, NM 87507.
Come get a first-look preview of Santa Fe’s most freaky character, before his ginormous head and cavernous body are joined together and hauled up the pole to meet his fate at the 97th Annual Burning of Zozobra at Fort Marcy Park on Friday, September 3, 2021. You can even put your own glooms right into ZOZOBRA and view his enormous head before it is joined to his body!
The ZozoFest Art Exhibit recognizes the importance of Zozobra as an icon for the city of Santa Fe. The Burning of Zozobra is an unforgettable spectacle that has inspired artwork for over nine decades, and ZozoFest brings hundreds of inspired depictions of Santa Fe’s favorite malcontent to one place. Old Man Gloom’s dedicated fans can purchase one-of-a-kind artwork, limited edition prints, sculptures, photographs, and creative works in a variety of media to take home. Hundreds of drawings created by Santa Fe Public School students will also be on display, showcasing the enduring love for Santa Fe’s oldest grouch.
“When the Kiwanis Club builds Zozobra, we accept that we have to get rid of him,” says Zozobra Event Chair, Ray Sandoval. “This is his entire purpose, but the artwork created in his likeness gives him a chance to stay alive year-round, existing as an important element in our history and culture. The art show is also extremely inclusive. We’ve never had to turn down any artists and the entry fee is $0. It doesn’t matter if it’s an artist’s first time showing in an art show or their 100th––all are welcome.”
This year, ZozoFest sends Zozobra into the totally rad 1980s for the Decades Project, so we can all imagine a trip Back to the Future! ZozoFest caps off the City of Santa Fe’s summer season with the following fun ways to connect to this iconic tradition:
